Travelling With Your Pet

Taking your pet with you on holiday is easy & fun. As a regular traveler to France, this is my guide to successful stress-free trips abroad:

The Pet Passport:

Taking your dog on holiday to Europe is easy so long as you follow a few simple steps:

1. Microchip, this must have been implanted by a vet and before the rabies vaccine. Your pets chip will be read by border control on return to the UK

2. Rabies vaccination, this lasts 3 years and can be given from 12 weeks of age

3. The Pet passport is issued and you can go on holiday after 21 days from the rabies vaccine

4. See a vet between 1 and 5 days before returning to the UK for a wormer to be given. Make sure they sign and stamp the passport. This can be done in the UK if you are going away for less than 5 days

If travelling anywhere from the middle of France southwards you will be in the Leishmania zone and should either have your dog vaccinated against this, or you should put an anti sand-fly collar on them ('Scalibor Collar')

Travel Sickness

Many people may not be aware that their dog suffers from car sickness or motion sickness. A study has found as many as 1 in 5 dogs suffer from motion sickness

Symptoms of Motion Sickness in Dogs:

Car sickness in dogs is not well understood, but is believed to be related to centers of the brain that control balance and process motion. Motion sickness can also be related to fear and anxiety about car rides.Dogs suffering from motion sickness may show a variety of signs, including:

  • Drooling
  • Dry heaving
  • Excessive lip licking
  • Excessive panting
  • Inactivity
  • Pacing
  • Restlessness
  • Shaking
  • Vomiting
  • Whining
  • Yawning

If your dog demonstrates any of these signs during car rides, ask us if your dog may be suffering from motion sickness and how CERENIA® (maropitant citrate) may help
