Natasha's Mobility Clinic:

Maintaining Healthy Joints - Managing Arthritis

Hi! Welcome to my Mobility Clinic.

Arthritis is the wear & tear of your pets joints due to age, injury or genetic faults such as hip dysplasia. It can be very debilitating, and reduce your little loved one's ability to get the most out of life.

Our mobility clinics at the surgery review your pet's aches & pains, range of joint motion & body condition, aiming to find a holistic plan to get them moving - reviewing a combination of weight management, exercise, medicines, physiotherapy & acupuncture.

There's lots you can do at home to improve your pets mobility, but there are so many supplements to choose between it can be overwhelming - so I've picked which we think are the best out there.

Our Favorite Mobility Support Techniques:

Yumove Advance

How does it work?

1. Aiding stiff joints:

YUMOVE ADVANCE for Dogs contains a high strength extract of Green Lipped Mussel to soothe joints. Green Lipped Mussel (GLM) contains two Omega 3s, EPA (found in many fish oils) and ETA (found only in GLM) to support the natural anti-inflammatory process.

2. Supporting joint structure

N-acetyl-D-glucosamine is a primary building block of the structural matrix of connective tissue in joints. It is a key precursor to glycosaminoglycan production in the joint, and forms a core part of the structure of Hyaluronic Acid, supporting synovial fluid function.

3. Maintaining joint mobility

Active dogs, such as those taking part in agility, field sports or racing produce additional free radicals. Vitamins C & E are included to provide antioxidant activity against free radicals produced during exercise.

Clinically Proven

Following two and half years of rigorous clinical research by the Royal Veterinary College, YUMOVE is now the first joint supplement ever to be clinically proven to work in just 6 weeks.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine (single-use, disposable) needles into recognised sites or sensitive acupuncture points on the body which are associated with the area of the body or the condition being treated. These points are selected after a very thorough examination of the patient, particularly of the musculoskeletal system.

You can book an appointment with Sarah our acupuncture vet on a Monday or a Friday at the surgery. Acupuncture appointments cost £45.00, and take between 20 and 40 minutes. If Sarah feels she can help your pet, she would normally recommend a course of appointments weekly or monthly. This is covered by most pet insurance companies as acupuncture is a well recognized treatment for animals. If it suits you better, Sarah can arrange a home visit.

Cartrophen injections

Cartrophen Vet is a revolutionary advance in the treatment for arthritis in dogs.

Cartrophen Vet (pentosan polysulfate sodium) is a prescription only, injectable, sulphated sugar of plant origin. It has many sites of action within the underlying processes of the arthritis disease which helps maintain joint health, including preserving joint cartilage. It is therefore classified as a disease modifying osteoarthritis drug (DMOAD)

The treatment:

Cartrophen Vet is an injection given under the skin with four weekly doses. It is essential that your dog complete all 4 injections to ensure optimal benefit and modification of the disease process.

80% of pets respond quickly to the initial course with a reduction in lameness and pain and a subsequent increase in activity and well-being.

The frequency of treatment varies from once a year for mild cases and up to three times a year for severe cases.

How does Cartrophen Vet work?

Cartrophen Vet works to modify the underlying arthritic processes to relieve pain and lameness. Improvements from Cartrophen Vet result in long-term effects lasting beyond the treatment period of 4 weeks (Smith et al., 2001), up to one year in some cases.

Cartrophen Vet has been shown to exhibit the following modes of action

  1. Stopping the destructive enzymes that break down cartilage, which is the body's natural shock absorber )
  2. Stimulate the body's production of cartilage
  3. Stimulate the body's production of joint lubricant
  4. Clear the blockages in blood vessels to deliver nutrition to the joint and bone
  5. Stimulate the production of anti-oxidants that block damaging free radicals

How much does it cost?

  • Under 15Kg body weight: £36.50
  • 15-30Kg body weight: £46.50
  • Over 30Kg body weight: £56.50
